The OfficeServ Firewall capability is embedded within the MP11 or WIM modules. Firewall is bi-directional filter to protect internal users from attack from the outside world.
What is the firewall used for? A firewall is a device that is used to prevent unauthorised access to or from a private network. The firewall sits between the Internet and the network. Most of you who have a PC at home and deploy the Windows XP operating system will know that a firewall is included as part of the security element of that system. If the network is connected to the Internet, as is very likely, then a whole raft of security issues can develop. The Internet is a two-way street as it enables outsiders to step in and gain access to your network. The firewall therefore helps to prevent unauthorised access. For the ultimate in security the firewall can be configured to block all access, however, for normal business purposes this is impractical and the firewall must be configured to suit the needs of the enterprise. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. In these cases all messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the security criteria of the enterprise
